Feedback: Artist Exploration Exercise

    1. This exercise was helpful in allowing us to learn about artists we may not have known about before. It also was entertaining because categorizing the artists, paintings, and pictures was kind of like a game. Researching individual artists was also helpful because instead of needing to study many different artists each group chose one which made it easier to focus and find interesting facts about individuals.

    2. The exercise could be more engaging if it was in some sort of competition format instead of just organizing pictures so that people could be more interested in completing it.

    3. Currently we’re doing perspective and many of the artists work that we looked at had a strong use of perspective or a strong use of color similar to what we’ll be doing when we get closer to finishing our perspective final.

    1. This exercise was helpful because we had to figure out the styles of paintings that went together, and the artists. Also we learned more about artists that we may not have known anything about.
    2. If there were maybe more paintings, more artists and if we had more time to research our artist.
    3. All the artists use perspective in their paintings.

    The exercise was very helpful because we had to use strategies and things that we already knew about each artist to help sort the information into groups. It made it much easier to do it in steps, too. Instead of being handed the artist, painting, and titles all at once, we were able to sort them one at a time and we could accumulate more information from each step.

    I wouldn’t change anything about the activity.

    This exercise connects to the work we do in class because we are constantly learning new techniques and different ways to create a composition. Learning about the ways that different artists make their work and how they can make it more interesting really helps us form our own work and let’s us experiment with our homework.

    1. By working in pairs we were able to share ideas to better complete the assignment but we also were stimulated personally to match an artists work to their name, technique and time period by using our prior knowledge.

    2. Maybe a competition amongst tables would have caused us to work with more enthusiasm while still getting the same information out of the activity.

    3. It is interesting to see how other artists use color to create vivid and more realistic representations as well as abstract and unique compositions.

    1. This exercise pounded the name, work, style ect. of many artists into my head. When I see paintings now in my house or elsewhere, I will be able to compare it to one of the artists we studied today. The activity was not only informative, but it was also engaging. I thought that the competition factor made it a blast to try and do my best.

    2. I would like to see the same artwork only with some titles and pieces that do not apply to any of the other components. That way, we will be forced to find the non- matches too.

    3. The art that we looked at showed color, perspective, and also the aspects we strive to put into our own work.

    1.) I liked this exercise because it allowed us do some exploring and learning on our own.

    2.) It would have been easier for me to do this exercise alone- without a partner. It also would have helped me to know what specific information needed to be included in our paragraph.

    3.) Claude Monet is an artist that I think uses perspective in his work. Specifically, to me, his work stands out in th categories of atmospheric perspective. Overall, I can make a lot of connections with him and our current unit on perspective.

    1. This excercise gave me a much better understanding of different artists and their styles, and gave me some strategies on how to match the title of a painting with its painting.
    2. The one thing that would have made this more engaging and helpful is if we could have practiced with paintings from an artist that are very different. This would have really challenged us to find smaller styles and strategies used.
    3. Many of the paintings were in perspective. This relates to the work we are currently doing in class. Seeing many of the works in perspective gave me a better understanding on different ways to use perspective and how the professionals use it. These ideas and styles used could be helpful in our perspective drawings we’re doing right now.

    1. I think that this activity was very engaging. We were forced to come to conclusions as a pair, and it gave us a different way to look at things by having a partner. When were matched the pictures together it was helpful because it was a way of looking at technique and using that to help us figure out which artist made it. Also, matching the titles was a good way for us to learn what the different mediums were as well as what dates the artist made each piece.

    2. I think that the matching of artists were mainly based on what signature people could make out from the art. The only flaw was that and maybe making it so you could not see that would help this activity.

    3. I noticed that one of the authors use perspective and it reminded me of what we are doing with one-point perspective. Also, all of the authors used color, which is another main topic that we are learning.

    1) This exercise was helpful because it is important to know many different artists, and to be able to recognize their work. If we just learn a technique, it is harder to understand how it can be used without an example. This exercise helped me to understand how to notice similarities and differences in works. Also, it was fun…. even though you said not to say that….

    2) This exercise would have ben more fun with some more artists, not just the five that we had. Having more tome would also be greatly helpful. The group that I was in didn’t have time to finish.

    3) In class we are still learning about color, and we are also now learning about perspective. Like I said in number one, having an example helps many people to learn better. The works that were selected are good examples of what we are learning about, and that was the most helpful.

    1. The artists and their work was interesting and helped us notice little similarities in paintings and to see how the techniques are used.

    2. It might be more helpful and engaging if their was less focus on the lives of the artists and more on their work.

    3. The exercise helped train us to notice and encorporate several styles and techniques over a range of mediums in our art.

    1. The project was engaging in that we really had to think logically in order to make good, usually accurate guesses. This caused us to pay more attention to minor details and style changes, including color, perspective, and other things we studied.
    2. Perhaps we could research two artist within a group.
    3. Well, our artist used color to add to his style more than anything, so our unit on color was helpful for fully analyzing his unique method of painting. Also, his paintings of building showed a level of understanding on perspective.

    1. In what ways was this exercise helpful, meaningful, and/or engaging?
    This assignment taught us a lot about artists who we didn’t know much about. I liked that the focus was on not only the famous names like Monet but less famous painters like Wolf Kahn.

    2. In what ways could this exercise be more helpful, meaningful, and/or engaging?
    I really do not like having to do the wiki about the particular artist, especially having to cite the work. It doesn’t really seem like an activity, more like something a homework assignment. I think that I would almost preferred doing the wiki part as a different assignment, perhaps as a sketchbook grade. That aspect of it did not seem like an activity at all.
    3. What connections can you make between this exercise and the work we are currently doing in class?
    Currently, we are studying perspective, and although I didn’t find much of that in there, the distinct use of color by each artist was used in the activity.

    1. This exercise was very helpful to me because it caused us all to gain more knowledge about many artists that we may not have known anything about in the first place. It was also very helpful because it taught us about different techniques that well known artists use so that we can incorporate them in our work later on. It was engaging because of he fact that we got to work with a partner and had interactive work instead of doing it alone.

    2. This exercise could be more engaging by having us do more work together as a class or by making more exciting activities for us to work with. It could also be more helpful if we could practice the skill r technique done by the artist hat we researched.

    3. One connection that I made was the artists use of color and their of perspective in a lot of the work we saw.

    1. In what ways was this exercise helpful, meaningful, and/or engaging?
    This exercise provided an interesting look at an artist about whom I knew very little beforehand. I had no idea that he created the volume of work that he did, or that any one person could possibly create so much art.

    2. In what ways could this exercise be more helpful, meaningful, and/or engaging?
    The exercise felt very discombobulated and disconnected.

    3. What connections can you make between this exercise and the work we are currently doing in class?
    It helps to study artists who are already very talented in their media because we can take the techniques and styles that they employ and use them to improve our own pieces.

    1. It was helpful because it allowed me to see perspective used in a professional way. It was also helpful because it helped in identifying different artist’s styles and techniques such as color. I thought it was also helpful because in the paintings, I could really start to identify the orthogonal lines and vanishing points and see how the artists set up the objects in the picture to be in perspective.

    2. Incorporate more artists and paintings into the activity.

    3. The paintings used in the activity all used perspective and currently in this unit, we are working on one-point and two-point perspective. Our last unit was color and in the paintings, color was a big aspect (color schemes, complementary colors).

    1. We were able to get to know more about a single artist. Also, we can work in groups, thus getting more ideas than if we were working by ourselves.

    2. The only way that this activity could be more meaningful is if we had more paintings. This will give us more knowledge of the artists styles and artwork.

    3. There were many examples of good color schemes and perspective. This activity gave us ideas of color schemes for our perspective landscape. Furthermore, this activity showed us ways to incorporate perspective into our other pieces of art.
